Context and environment

There has been a British Council presence in Tanzania since 1947. English Language Teaching forms a major part of the operational strategy with offers available for young learners, adults and corporate students The Teaching Centre team consists of a Centre Manager, an Academic Programme Manager and currently 5 other teachers, Registrar, a Business Development Manager and a Customer Services Team.

The Teaching Centre operates all year round. We have approximately 400 students per term.


The post holder will support British Council’s global English strategy by:

 -  delivering teaching to the highest standards of English Language Teaching.
 -  enhancing British Council’s reputation as a world authority in English Language Teaching.
 -  continuing professional development and sharing of best practices. 


 -  Ensuring teaching meets learner needs and expectations.
 -  Ensuring teaching meets quality standards and organisational expectations. 
 -  Maintaining good relationships with customers and colleagues. 
 -  Supporting the teaching centre’s activities and British Council plans. 

Main duties

1.  Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups.

2.  Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy.

3.  Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards.

4.  Actively engage in professional development to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning.

5.  At all times deliver excellent customer service. 

6.  Ensure standards for the following policies are upheld:
 -  Child protection
 -  Equal Opportunity and Diversity
 -  Health and safety

 - (Centre-specific) i.e. Evening and weekends, split shifts (where relevant) attendance at Teacher Training workshops etc.
 - Right to live and work in Tanzania.
 -  Criminal Records Bureau check

Please note: the other behaviours will not be assessed at interview. However, all behaviours will be used for performance management purposes once the post holder is at post.

Newly qualified teachers Consideration will also be given to candidates who are willing to study for TEFL qualifications.


Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language or equivalent.

Desirable requirements

 -  2 years teaching experience
 -  IELTS examiner
 -  Young Learner &Young Adult experience

 -  Recognised diploma in EFL i.e. DELTA
