The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust. We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body.

Role Purpose:

This is an exciting, challenging role which will lead the teaching businesses not only in Romania but in a dynamic cluster of 5 countries in the EU and Wider Europe. This is the part of our European regions which offers the greatest opportunity for growth and innovation in line with our global Junior English Language Teaching (JELT) expansion strategy. Market opportunities vary from country to country, and the ability to manage complexity and dispersed teams will be essential. The post holder will be a dynamic business leader, with a track record of business growth and success in major markets.

The post holder will also act as Deputy Director Romania, and will play a key role on the Romania country management team and will from time to time be required to deputise fully for Director, representing the British Council with the British Embassy and other UK stakeholders in Romania and engaging with a wide range of external Romanian contacts in different contexts and beyond the English Strategic Business Unit (SBU).

Main opportunities/challenges for this role:
  • A  key challenge is to maintain and grow the highly successful teaching programmes across the Eastern cluster and Wider Europe, while maintaining margins at the same high level. This will require careful management and exploitation of opportunities for business development in the face of growing competition.
  •  As Romania seeks to review its activities as part of the corporate Status and Tax initiative, the postholder will need to engage closely with the process.
  • A further challenge is to ensure an integrated approach to our communications and relationships with the wider ELT sector, including the Ministry of Education, the network of ministry inspectors of English, teachers’ associations, exams partner language schools and their teachers.

This is a English & Exams Role , open to all internal and external candidates candidates ,located in Bucharest, Romania . An International Mobility Package will be available for candidates applying from abroad.
