Marketing at the British Council is a strategic function which drives awareness, understanding and engagement with us across our diverse audiences. We use insight, knowledge and analysis of our market and our customers to engage them with the British Council’s international cultural relations mission, our products and services in the most impactful and effective way. We lead the development of our brand and use our expertise to tell inspiring stories to enhance our global reputation, build lifelong relationships, engage our staff and prove our impact

The purpose of this role is to deliver professionally run externally focused events which involve senior stakeholders and contacts, ensuring clear strategic direction and alignment with the Communications strategy as part of the wider Marketing and organisational strategy. The role reports to the Lead Events Manager to ensure best practice and frameworks for the organisation are delivered


Main duties will include:    

 Events Management and planning
  • Designs, plans, delivers and manages the logistics of a variety of events and conferences in the UK and overseas which create impact and strengthen the reputation and profile of the British Council among senior stakeholders and contacts.
  • Maintains an overview of the whole event including venue searching, event design and branding and liaising with suppliers.
  • Support the Lead Events Manager with on-going strategic planning.

Stakeholder Management
  • Manages effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders in the UK and across the global network. 
  • Advises event commissioners and shapes events so that they meet corporate objectives and maximise the opportunities offered by the event.
  • Supports external stakeholder relationships through events, including partners and high level senior contracts/guests e.g. parliamentarians, HMG, Trustees, etc. 

Financial management, risk and compliance
  • Responsible for the evaluation of events including post event reports and ensure compliance is met. 
  • Manages the associated budget using SAP and to corporate standards. 
  • Ensures health and safety standards are met and risk assessments are documented.
  • Researches and records a range of potential new suppliers and events resources to ensure value for money such as printers, AV and venues.
  • Negotiates, procures and authorises contracts and manages third party suppliers in line with procurement and government regulations.

Functional expertise
  • Provides expert professional advice, support and challenge on events management to internal customers and other stakeholders to support the development of high quality, effective and appropriate events (via the intranet pages, delivery of webinars and events management training).

  •   Substantial experience in managing high profile and complex events
  •   Experience of managing a range of events within varying budgets
  •   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to work with a range of diverse stakeholders at all levels
