Role Purpose:

 Marketing at the British Council is a strategic function which drives awareness, understanding and engagement with us across our diverse audiences. We use insight, knowledge and analysis of our market and our customers to engage them with the British Council’s international cultural relations mission, our products and services in the most impactful and effective way. We lead the development of our brand and use our expertise to tell inspiring stories to enhance our global reputation, build lifelong relationships, engage our staff and prove our impact.

This role is part of a team that delivers the external media strategy, promoting and protecting the British Council’s reputation through the UK media.  Working to the Head of Media and Senior Media Officer - Arts, this role devises creative PR approaches for arts projects across broadcast, print, digital and social media, to reach people in the UK and showcase the British Council’s cultural relations work around the world. This role also offers reputation management support to colleagues in more than 100 countries, plus support to colleagues across our global English and Education programmes.



Main opportunities/challenges in this role:
To develop, implement and evaluate proactive PR campaigns positioning the British Council in the UK national and key education sector media to build awareness, understanding and engagement 
To work collaboratively with colleagues including cultural engagement teams in London and  colleagues based in other countries.
To manage potential reputational risks calmly and professionally on behalf of the British Council and the UK’s international relations

What require of the successful candidate: 

  • Demonstrable experience of proactive media relations or content creation to support business objectives
  • Experience of developing relationships with high-profile journalists, across print, digital and broadcast media, and working with them to deliver impactful coverage.
  • Experience of working with communications teams in partner organisations on joint projects to ensure that all partners achieve their communications objectives on a shared project.
  • Editorial judgement
  •  Excellent understanding of the UK arts media environment and trends, including knowledge of digital and social media 
  • Good awareness of UK public policy, including media environment and trends, and digital and social media
