Role purpose

To support British Council’s global English strategy through the implementation and management of activity plans in support of Ethiopia Teaching Centre strategy to meet income and impact targets and enhance the British Council’s reputation in Ethiopia for English language teaching expertise.

Teaching Centre Overview

The British Council has had a presence in Ethiopia since 1938 although the Teaching Centre (TC) is early in its life cycle, now in its fourth year. We are a small and growing business with ambitious plans for growth over the coming years.    

Our Customers 
We currently serve three key adult customer segments looking for high quality English language and skills development to support career advancement. Our Business to Customer (B2C) base is a mix of middle-income university students, young professionals and members from the international community, Addis Ababa being the seat of the African Union and host to numerous embassies. We teach General English, IELTS Coach and Professional Skills to over 300 adult students each term.   We have four bright and spacious classrooms equipped with audio visual facilities and WIFI and there are break out options onto the terrace and garden spaces.   In partnership with a local school, we are introducing a young learner offer this summer piloting Primary Plus with plans to expand this into the coming academic year.   Our Business to Business (B2B) offer serves public and private sector entities. Clients include multinationals such as Heineken, non-governmental organisations such as Oxfam, UN bodies and ministries. 

Our Competitors 

Ethiopia TC is top of the market. Lower cost English language providers exist but do not target the same segments and have virtually no online presence. Professional skills providers are on the market and likely to grow in response to increasing demand largely influenced by multinationals and Ethiopia’s strategic location in East Africa.        

Our Team  
Our teaching team comprises full time locally engaged, hourly paid teachers, this new post and an Academic Coordinator. The team is supported by a Teaching Centre Operations Manager/Customer Service Lead, Resources Officer and Head of English and Exams.  Main opportunities/challenges for this role:  Ethiopia TC is well positioned to take advantage of the strategic windows that currently exist in the adult market for English and professional skills and the market for young learner English in Addis Ababa. Priority areas of focus for the post holder include:  New Product Offering - Roll out our YL offer is a key priority for the centre as it offers significant growth opportunities. Following a pilot of Primary Plus in the summer, the post holder will play a key role in the establishment of an annual young learner programme delivering open classes at a partner school.  Teaching and Learning - Developing the quality of teaching and learning across our adult and young learner course offer in line with our statement of approach, ensuring relevance to customers and building positive engagement with teachers, learners and parents.  Systems and Processes - Continuous improvement of our academic systems and processes so that they are fit for purpose, gaps are closed, Teaching Quality Standards (TQS) are met and customer experience enhanced.  Customer Loyalty - Continue to increase retention rates as we grow through a customer focused augmented offer to adult learners, exploring wraparound options to add value.     

Main Accountabilities:  
  
Product Portfolio Management 
High quality delivery of English language products and services, ensuring that adult and YL courses meet the needs of internal and external customers, enabling Ethiopia Teaching Centre to achieve its objectives in support of country and regional plans.         
  • Lead on academic management for Ethiopia TC in accordance with British Council global policy, best practice and market insight  
  • Teaching and Customer Service teams are briefed on courses and procedures  
  • Learner expectations are managed through effective communications pre, during and post course delivery
  • Teaching Quality Standards for teaching, learning, product and promotion are met and maintained  
  • Sense of learner progress is managed through robust academic systems and processes  
  • Ensure effective systems for gathering customer and teacher feedback are in place, monitor and evaluate to determine underlying customer needs and identify improvements to product and service delivery  
  • Resources are monitored, evaluated, and reviewed regularly to support teaching and learning  
  • Lead on initiatives in product and service development, e.g. syllabus design, assessment procedures and reporting, ensuring this is based on evidence from customer and market research and in consultation with TC management team.         
People Management  

Support recruitment and retention, working with the country team to foster a positive working environment for all, using effective communication and influencing skills to lead and manage the teaching team and resources effectively. 
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of an annual training programme and the Academic Quality Plan in line with centre and team needs. 
  • Engage in effective performance management and performance development of teachers in compliance with global policy frameworks 
  • Serve as a resource and role model of good classroom practice and ELT expertise 
  • Line manage teaching colleagues in line with HR policy and practice for TCs.   
Risk Management 

Support the management of risk across TC activity.

  • Ensure teachers are up to date with all mandatory training e.g. Information Management, Child Protection etc.
  • Conduct regular spot checks in support of Teaching Quality Standards, monthly/quarterly reporting and compliance e.g. web content, TCMS record keeping, brand and copyright 
  • Plan and organise regular standardisation/refresher training to support quality, compliance and communications
  • Keep abreast of developments in ELT theory and practice using internal and external sources 
  • Work with the management team to ensure that duty of care is applied to customers and staff alike (Health and Safety, Child Protection, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion etc.)  
  • Lead on Child Protection for Ethiopia Teaching Centre working with the country Child Protection Focal Point
  • Keep abreast of country, regional and global change initiatives    
Operations Management 
As a member of the TC management team, contribute to the smooth running of day to day TC operations. Activity will include:
  • attendance at team meetings and information cascade as required 
  • serving as duty manager as scheduled 
  • timetabling, duty manager and substitution scheduling 
  • customer handling and tier 2 complaints management oversight and support of registration and placement testing 
  • support for marketing campaign activity planning, implementation and tracking 
  • contribute to TC recruitment initiatives    
Teaching  
Plan, prepare and deliver up to 12 hours of teaching per week (Adults and Young Learners) considering individual learning styles and providing an environment conducive to learning. 
        
Other important requirements of the job 

The post will typically work Tuesday to Saturday. The post holder may be required to modify their working week on occasion to ensure oversight of activity taking place and manage leave across the team. Occasional split shift work may be required as will attendance at British Council events.

Role Specific Knowledge and Experience
 
  • A minimum of First degree with 2 years full time teaching experience.  Relevant IH Certificate/ Diploma or similar relevant masters are desirable. 
  • High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module 
  • TEFL Q qualification (DELTA or Trinity Diploma in TESOL).   
  • Teaching skills in class room management, course and lesson planning, subject knowledge, understanding your learners and learning technologies. 
  • Recognised YL teaching qualification, e.g. PGCE/BEd in Primary or relevant subject, TYLEC or YL extension to CELTA 
  • Proven ability to manage or contribute to and develop pedagogic activities such as syllabus design, teacher timetabling, class scheduling, course planning. 
  • Proven ability of undertaking teacher observations, teacher training, line management and / or professional development of teachers and support staff. 
  • Experience of line managing/ coordinating teaching teams
